In a published opinion, the Ninth Circuit has allowed a case to proceed against the City of Santa Maria, the Santa Maria Police Department, and individual officers for the attempted suicide of a troubled young man who hung himself with his own belt while left unattended in a holding cell in violation of the department's own policies. Martin represented the young man, who suffered permanent brain injury and is now unable to communicate or care for himself.

The Court of Appeal has affirmed a $3.5 million judgment for Martin's clients in a wrongful death action arising from a car accident that killed a 16-year old girl and seriously injured her mother.

The Court of Appeal has reversed a judgment in favor of an architect and electrical engineer in an action alleging professional negligence for the installation of a battery back-up system in an occupied basement office of a theater.  The batteries overheated and emitted toxic sulfuric gases into the office, causing Martin's client to develop pulmonary fibrosis.
